Mang Thít

In Mang Thit district, the traditional brick and pottery villages have a long history and have become one of the largest regions with numerous handmade brick and pottery kilns in the Mekong Delta area. Mang Thit pottery comes in diverse colors and styles, ranging from simple to intricate, and has gained recognition in the global market, especially in Asia and Europe.

Today, Mang Thit is part of Vinh Long province. Historically, it was a part of Long Ho Dinh, established by Lord Nguyen in 1732, encompassing the provinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, and a portion of Can Tho.

This area witnessed some of the fiercest battles between the Tây Sơn brothers and Lord Nguyen in the late 18th century. The Mang Thit River has left its mark in Vietnamese history as the place where Nguyen Hue defeated the Siamese army, aiding Nguyen Anh in 1784.

Mang Thit is renowned for its “Kingdom of Bricks.” It stretches along the banks of several rivers, including the Co Chien River, the Cai Nhum River, and the Thay Cai canal. Highways with smooth asphalt traverse the district, connecting it to other areas in Vinh Long province.

The diverse pottery of Mang Thit, with its rich colors and varied designs, has made a name for itself globally, particularly in Asia and Europe. The district’s longstanding brick and pottery craft villages continue to thrive in the Mekong Delta.

Together with the Co Chien River, the Mang Thit River has contributed to the prosperity of local farmers, providing stable aquaculture production and abundant harvests—a crucial factor in the region’s agricultural transformation.

This area is home to nearly 1,000 brick workshops with around 2,000 kilns. The lives of local residents are closely tied to each red brick and every firing kiln. If you visit Mang Thit during brick-making days, you’ll witness smoke billowing from countless chimneys

For hardworking individuals toiling away on humble bricks, they will eventually construct countless houses and monumental architectural structures across the entire country, providing livelihoods for numerous rural laborers.
